Petaling Jaya, 23 August 2011 – British American Tobacco (Malaysia) Berhad (BAT Malaysia) said today that it fully supports the latest announcement made by the Ministry of Health to take stern action against relevant parties involved in the illegal act of encouraging the public to collect foils on cigarette packs in exchange for gifts as it amounts to contravention of the Control of Tobacco Product Regulations 2004.
William Toh, Managing Director of BAT Malaysia said, “There have been reports of groups or individuals who are approaching members of the public to collect the resealable inner packaging foil on cigarette pack on one of our brands on the basis that the foils can be used to redeem for either wheelchairs for charitable purposes, free cigarette packs or monetary redemption.”
“We view this matter seriously and when we heard that the foil on one of our cigarette pack was used by unscrupulous parties to mislead the public, we lodged a police report on the matter. We will not hesitate to take legal action against any individual and/or company who have misused any of our brand names for such illegal activities,” concluded Toh.
Toh stressed that BAT Malaysia is not involved in such activities and neither endorses nor condones it. The Company strongly disapproves of such efforts to manipulate the legitimate use of any of its cigarette brand name. Individuals who have been approached by parties using the Company and/or its cigarette brand names or foils on its packs for any of these activities are advised to ignore all such solicitations.
