Petaling Jaya, 10 August 2010 – British American Tobacco (Malaysia) Bhd (BAT Malaysia) today announced a collaboration with Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) to launch and implement a new 24-hour state-of-the-art hijack surveillance and counter measure system for its sales vans throughout Malaysia to protect its vehicles against hijacks and robberies and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The new system, unveiled by the guest-of-honour Deputy Commissioner of Police Dato’ Khalid Abu Bakar, Chief Police Officer of Selangor today, is a step taken by BAT Malaysia working together with PDRM to counter hijacks and robberies on its sales vans following series of such incidents over the last two years. In 2009, BAT Malaysia experienced 24 such incidents and 17 more between January and May 2010, which has resulted in significant losses to the Company and has impacted the safety of its employees.
At the launch, Dato’ Khalid Abu Bakar said, “We are appreciative of BAT Malaysia’s decision to partner with PDRM in enhancing the security of its business. The initiative and innovation taken by BAT Malaysia is a very good example of how the community at large including corporate bodies can play a role and work together with the police in combating crime. On behalf of PDRM, we are committed to support and assist BAT Malaysia with this new security system by working closely with its central command centre to heighten monitoring of hijacks and to apprehend hijackers red-handed.”
Speaking at the launch event, BAT Malaysia’s Managing Director, William Toh said, “The hijackers are extremely organised and systematic in their modus operandi and have not only disrupted our operations but more importantly, put the safety of our sales personnel at risk. At British American Tobacco Malaysia, our primary concern has always been the safety of our employees and with increasing hijack and robbery incidents targeted at our sales vans, it is imperative that we implement a system to deter hijackers and keep our people and assets safe when they are on the road.”
Elaborating on the security upgrade of the company’s sales vans, he added, “This 24-hour system centrally managed by a third-party security control centre, is fully integrated with PDRM’s Rakan COP network. Our salesmen have no control over the system and would not be able to disable it. Should any hijack and robbery incidents occur, the security call centre will immediately inform the Police, and guide their response to the crime scene. Through this integration, we are confident that the speed of response by PDRM to incidents of hijack and robbery will be greatly improved. This rapid PDRM response will be an effective deterrent against the hijackers.”
A vast array of security devices such as immobilizers, CCTVs and sirens have been installed in all British American Tobacco Malaysia’s sales vans. The integration of this system with Rakan COP hotline network will also improve police response to hijack significantly.
All British American Tobacco Malaysia’s sales vans have been equipped with the new security system and since the implementation of this system, it has prevented attempted hijack incidents. The Company will continue to monitor the situation and work closely with PDRM to ensure the safety and security of its employees and assets.
